Everyone loves “a good heist movie” – and while it’s entertaining to watch the “Ocean’s Eleven” crew break into an elaborate casino vault; or Stella from “The Italian Job” crack a safe filled with 35 million dollars in gold bars – in reality, we all want a safe that keeps our possessions protected. Whether filled with pricey valuables, important documents, or sentimental items, here are a few tips on choosing a safe that is right for your needs.
Determine the SIZE you need. Measure the dimensions of the items you’d like to store then plan on at least 25% more space to accommodate items you may have forgotten or might acquire later. A safe that is 25% larger than your current needs won’t likely cost 25% more, so it might be well worth it to choose the larger size. Match your measurements to sizes available from reputable manufacturers or if you are unsure about which size to choose, seek the advice of a professional. At Sure-Fit Security, we would be happy to help you determine the size of a safe suitable for your needs.
Determine the type of PROTECTION you need. Safes are built to meet certain standards of either fire resistance and/or burglar resistance. Documents and records can be safely stored in a fire resistant safe, however, valuables such a money, jewelry, guns or other enticing items should be kept in a burglar resistant safe. Are you planning to store hard drives, USB’s, memory sticks, CD’s, DVD’s, floppy disks, photographic negatives, or magnetic tapes? Choose a “media safe” for additional protection from heat and moisture, or choose a media-insert manufactured for installation in a UL Listed Fire Resistant Safe. FYI – “inserts” can take up a fair amount of space, so plan accordingly.
Determine the PRICE you’re willing to pay, and remember the old adage, “you get what you pay for.” Many inexpensive safes really don’t pose such a challenge. In fact, they can actually aid burglars by holding all your items in one box with can be hauled away or broken into on the spot! To truly protect your valuables, consider safes from respected brands with a solid record of performance. While quality safes are usually priced competitively, you should also take into account your preferences such as type of locking mechanism (combination, electronic push button, a high-security key without or with an additional combo lock) hardware, color, overall appearance, interiors and the like to determine your best value.
Consider other potential savings. If the contents of your safe are going to be insured or partially insured, contact your insurance agent to see if you will realize savings on your policy premium for an added level of protection. Also, talk to your accountant. If investment information is stored in a safe you may be allowed to take the cost of the safe or a portion of the safe as a tax deduction; as well as depreciate the value of the safe over time.
